Genuine handmade carpets are known for their durability and longliveness. Careful maintenance and cleaning from time to time adds to their beauty and usefulness.
Once a year, it is also good to vacuum the backside of the carpet (you can also leave the carpet paneled upside down for a few days in order to drop all the trapped dust on the floor).
Before you store your carpets for the summer, turn them upside down and walk on them as you would on the side of their pile. In this way – after a week – it will drop a lot of the dust that has penetrated into their base and will be cleaned better afterwards. With the vacuum cleaner absorb the dust falling on the floor as well as the one on the pile of carpets.
Many housewives before storing their carpets they shake them on the balcony of their home. Not only is this not necessary if the carpet is wiped well and often with a vacuum cleaner, but it can also damage the warps and wefts of the carpet from the strong knocks. In silk carpets – which are more sensitive – it is best to use a simple suction vacuum cleaner without a rotating brush.
Then you can refresh your carpets with a mild solution. White vinegar will disinfect their surface, remove the dust and revive their color. The vinegar / water ratio is 1/3 and is applied with a “passage” of a cloth or a soft brush – which you have drained well – in the direction of the pile of carpet. Dry your carpet in a shady, cool place and not under the sun because it will fade the colors.
* (Always before you do anything test color fastness at a small point – the edge of the carpet).
If you notice loose ends of yarn overhanging from the surface of the carpet do not try to pull them, simply cut them with the scissors parallel to the surface of the pile.
If you only want to clean the fringes of your carpet, roll it off by leaving it a little rolled up and place it somewhere up (table-end) with the fringes hanging freely outside.
Washing fringes is done only carefully in their area, without soaking the pile of carpet with the help of a gentle cleanser for woolen clothes using a soft brush. It is recommended that the detergent should be rinsed well and that it is well dried before storage.
Do not try to bleach them with chemicals (chlorine, chlorine-based bleaches), because you can burn them and rot. It is something that is repaired but of course it costs a lot, especially in the case of handmade carpets.
* There is a habit for a carpet to be left folded in the shape of a large packet. In the case that it is folded for more than 2 weeks, the traces of the folding will be shown on the carpet. It is also possible, the pressure that it receives because of the folding, to lead to the cut of the warp, which is the base of the carpet and this then will require a special repair.
Kachramanoglou firm recommends a deep cleaning of your carpets 1-2 times per 5 years depending on the carpet use and only by specialized carpet cleaners.
It is recommended to have your carpets cleaned by a professional not only because you do not know the specific method that each one requires but also because you will not be able to rinse them, drain them and dry them properly, making your carpets likely to overflow , discolor or even fade.
It is important to act quickly in case of stain. Do not let it get absorbed and dry deep inside your carpet. The sooner you act, the more easily you will dissolve it, removing the most part of it and preventing any discoloration or permanent damage.
It is advised to have in your house, white vinegar, pure gasoline, white alcohol, neutral detergent and soda. Absorbent cloths or papers will help you absorb at first the moist part of the stain.
Before doing anything, make sure that the color is indelible by soaking a white cloth and rubbing it on the edge of your carpet. If the cloth is painted, contact a special carpet cleaner. If the cloth is not colored, start cleaning from the outer edge of the stain to the center and towards the directions of pile of the carpet. Every cleaning attempt must be followed by an absorbent cloth that will absorb moisture from the stain. Do not soak the stain area. Finally, dry on the spot with the hair dryer. Remember the succession: application of solution-absorbent cloth for moisture.
